Costa Careyes Polo But where does the ancient sport that unites horse and man enter in the pastel-colored world of the Costa Alegre? Giorgio Brignone, himself an avid polo player, supervised the construction of horse stables at the Costa Careyes Polo Club in 1988, leveling papaya and corn fields to accommodate 100 horses, many of which fly in from Europe and the United States to participate with their riders in the Careyes season, which runs from November to April. Two polo fields with finely maintained Bermuda grass cut like a golf course were also installed. Today, players practice four times a week with as many as 60 horses which are available for rent and introduction classe. Off the field, the close-knit community of the Costa Careyes carries a breezy European attitude from sport into lifestyle and art. Dinners at magnificent homes with infinity pools overlook the sea and non-traditional celebratory fiestas, such as one marking Chinese New Year, are common. Though often cloistered in the fantastical world which lies beyond the candy-colored buildings, awe-inspiring natural surroundings and architectural wonders, a lively energy infuses the area which is made more intriguing with the traditional European noblemen’s sport of polo. |
